                                                May 24, 1861

DEAR SIR: I desire to present through you to the ladies of Hillsborough, who were so kind as to proffer their valuable services to make clothing for the soldiers of North Carolina, my thanks for the work they have done, and for the very complete and perfect manner in which it was made.  They are rendering to the State a service only second to that of the soldier in the field, and deserve consideration accordingly.  Whatever they may do in this way will save to the State much cost, and add to the comfort and efficiency of the troops by so much.

                                    I am, very truly yours,

                                    CHARLES F. FISHER

                                    J. U. Kirkland, Esq.
